"He HASN'T told me!" Fest protested, baring his teeth and shaking F.

Nacht actually took a step back from his friend as he shook the other mogi feeling for the first time since he'd met him as if he didn't recognise him. It was impossible for him to line up the smiling, convivial partner he'd been travelling with and this wild half feral lunatic who was attacking a kind preacher mogi relentlessly. Was this what frees were? Was everyone from the desert hot headed?

He couldn't do anything about it and could only look on helplessly.

F reached up with a paw and pointed above them. "It's up in the tree." he said feebly. "Above our little treethan friend."

At that moment, there was a shaking, and a gush of wind, as if all the magic was leaking out of the world at once.

Both wisps began whirling, faster and faster, making mournful noises.

Fest didn't look up, but instead appraised F wildly.

"We don't have time for this," he said, throwing F back to the ground. "Do you feel it, Master Nacht? The paths will close soon!" He donned his hat and sprung for the tree, nimbly making his way up the bark to where F had said (and he hoped with everything he had in him) that his things were safely stowed.

And there, thank everything, was....everything. His collections from the adventuring. His cloak, his gloves, all spread out in an almost ritualistic spread, with his marotte positioned upsidedown. He threw everything on, the cloak, his belongings, and taking his wand snapped each of the long thorns holding Nim and Yog captive.

Nim landed with a wriggly oof, and Yog on top of her. Yog began to quickly undo the web of thorns Nim had gotten herself twisted up in.

"Fortune smiled on you this eve, F, but not forever. Come, Master Nacht. We must fly!"

F picked himself up and brushed himself off in a flurry of white fur and rich fabrics. Let him have his things, there would be other things he could take and he'd gained much more from this little run in, not missing anything of the horrified look that Nacht had given the other mogi.

There had been a revelation here this day, someone had awakened and seeds had indeed been planted which would only grow.

Nacht followed automatically at a long sprint that was hardly fast, more out of instinct than anything in his thoughts. He looked back at F all the while, the small, frail looking creature who pulled himself to his feet even as the ways began to close.

"What if they all get trapped?" he said, with anguish in his voice, but he couldn't turn back, not now.

F knew he wouldn't be trapped, he'd prepared for such an eventuality, scaling the tree in a few able bounds and clambering onto the bug that waited patiently there, biting it with sharp little teeth to make it scurry where he wanted it to. A little out of spite as he thundered past he seized the thorns that were still wrapped around Nim and used them to drag her as far as he got away with in the direction of the way out of the vale.

He felt it was deserved for not shutting up and was a little more spiteful than usual, the bite on his leg stinging quite distractingly.

Nightscapes

Postby Toshi Thu Dec 29, 2016 12:26 am

Even if the days were unbearably hot, once the sun went down the desert became as cold as a distant moon. Most nights Fest stayed close to Nacht, but one clear night when the normally stinging wind was calm, he bundled up as much as he could and woke Nacht and the Bitten, to venture out into the sands with some warm blankets and promises of something worth seeing.

It was something he'd been eager to show Nacht from the first. Not the shining treasures of the Lootpile, or tempting waters of the Glittering Canyon, but as the last of the sun's light disappeared from the horizon a thousand distant lights slowly came to life in its place. They swirled together in strange, faraway clouds, expanding over the whole stretch of the sky until there were more stars than grains of sand, vast and impossible.

"It's the color of your pelt, Master Nacht," Fest said, petting him absently as they gazed.

Nacht hated the daytime in the desert, feeling like he was always on the brink of passing out, dragging himself from one patch of shade to another, cursing the way the sun seemed to soak into the very pigment of his fur, heating him up within mere moments until he all but radiated heat. The night was better. Sand didn’t hold heat at all, relinquishing the warmth of the day within what felt like moments and plummeting into a cold that ran deep, as if the sky came down to press upon the earth with its vast and uncaring celestial chill. This temperature was much more amenable to the thickly furred Mogi though less so to the bitten who had been asleep with his tail nestled in his tail, wings stretched comfortably around his body when he was roused. The blankets helped and Nacht gladly tossed his across Justin’s back. He’d never been one for elaborate names and the bitten was named after the very fact he’d arrived “just in” time to rescue them from the vale. For someone without much of a sense of humour, he was capable of some truly terrible puns.

The stars were truly magnificent overhead, view unrestricted by the trees he was used to. It was truly magnificent and the moon lit the dunes like a second sun. Against the dunes Nacht himself was a pool of darkness illuminated and highlighted only by his markings. He rolled onto his back and pulled Fest down onto his chest as he did so, forepaws wrapped around him.

“Night is best here.” He said. “I like it better.”

The soft glow of the Wisps were better than any lantern, and they hummed together playfully over the rolling dunes, their lights frail in comparison the vast illumination of above.

Fest cuddled close, his occasional shivers coming to a gradual end in the warmth of the other Mogi's fur.

"I thought you might," Fest said, "In the moonlight, the sands themselves glitter. Maybe your Tree abides on a celestial, rather than terrestrial plane, and we fall here as the stars do."

Overhead, a small and singular light streaked across the sky, as if in answer.

PT. 2 (Nightscapes)

Postby Toshi Fri Dec 30, 2016 10:17 pm

Back in the Sunwood, the area was already in the dark and cold grips of winter, and Fest did his fair share of paw-dragging as they returned to the part of the world the Loyals called home. He seemed to disappear into the snow at every hop, and his complaining rivaled Nacht's in the desert.

"It's a wonder that creatures even live here! I should like a warm burrow to last out the rest of this wretched weather. But what would we eat! My poor paws are half frozen off!"

But still, again when night fell, he roused Nacht, and the Bitten, and the wisps, with a very soft, "I've had a thought," and braved the barely survivable winter temperatures to foist his way up the nearest tree. It got colder as they climbed, but Fest was determined, and at last they were at the treetops of the Sunwood. Pushing the leaves and branches aside, it was there, as brilliant and vast as it had been in the open and treeless desert.

"You see?" Fest said, putting his paw on top of Nacht's and huddling close. He was looking up. "It's the same."

Nacht didn't make fun of Fest's climbing, appreciating the fact that the other Mogi was here with him at all. He climbed trees as if he had suckers on his feet, slowly and steadily making his way through the branches without risk or haste, his reach was far and his tail was surprisingly long. He had made his way through the snow much the same way, like a low sturdy snow plough, lowering his mask and just letting the snow move across his mask out of his way as he walked forward.

"I'd make sure you had plenty to eat." he said after , and placed his chin on the other Mogi's shoulder

Up in the treetops he snuggled up to Fest and fluffed up his thick winter coat. "It is." he said. "But it would be so much different if I was here on my own. I am not sure what I'd do without someone to make me look better at climbing than them."

Fest gave Nacht a light and playful shove. "When the weather is fairer, we will have a race and see who is what!"

But otherwise he was content to watch the sky quietly.

"...This must be what it's like for Justin, to be so suspended between earth and sky. Oh, Master Nacht, there are still so many magics left in the world, and some are for keeping, but this particular magic is reserved for anyone, anywhere, and no one can hold it. There is no symmetry in the stars."

And he twitched his torn ear, and looked out with his single eye, and could see why some mogis cast their wishes out into the darkness.
