[Archive] Seph and Acan

Postby Baneful Tue Nov 27, 2018 10:00 pm

Acan glared up through the rain, squinting as it stung her eyes. She'd allowed herself a rare moment of pleasure, having ventured out of her lair onto a nearby plateau amid a range of otherwise jagged mountains, to bask in the downpour, letting it wash the grime from between her scales and cool her skin from the flaring heat of oestrous. But, predictably, her little excursion had invited unwanted attention very quickly.

The male that flew wide circles above her was smaller than her by about a third, she guessed. His body was slight, with most of his silhouette made up of huge papery wings. The way the rain glistened off him suggested he lacked scales. Acan snorted, spraying rain water in a fine mist. The quality of males stalking her was getting lower and lower. Perhaps because she'd been eating all the marginally more impressive ones.

On previous occasions over the years, Acan had almost enjoyed being in heat. It was like a delivery service of witless prey. And prey that she could charm, lead on, enjoy the electricity of her own raging hormones, and then slaughter as quickly as she liked. But last time things hadn't gone as planned and had left the already sour female with a bitter taste for company. Now her heat was nothing short of enraging.

Her scent was a dense cloud of pheromones that lit her up like a beacon to male dragons for miles around. No matter how often she moved, how deep she delved, there was no escape from the unwanted attention. She'd even littered the area around her current lair with the mangled carcasses of previous suitors, but the idiot beasts only tripped over them in their rush to agitate her.

This one's tactic was to circle around in the air and dip in to swat at her with its wide, flat tail. The stench of her femaleness made him dumb to the fact that she was of a different species, that their coupling would produce nothing. Acan sat back and watched him idly, her wings unfurled wide to the rain. The cool touch of water on their membranes was the fastest way to lower her body temperature, and one of the few places she still felt any sensitivity.

When the wyvern finally ducked back around to swipe at her, crooning a pitiful, ear-splitting mating call as he went, Acan thrust her head up like a dog lazily catching a frisbee and snatched him out of the air. Her teeth latched around his lowered tail, and she gave a hard, fast pull so that his momentum caused him to crash hard. She let him go and sat back again, carelessly watching the dazed and crumpled creature react to the sudden impact. The only injury from the fall was a rather devastating head wound that left him twitching and gargling quietly, but would take a long, long time to kill him.

Acan closed her eyes against the rain, making the most of it while it lasted, and lifted her head to release a deep and satisfied exhalation of breath.

Seph had forgotten what the rain felt like. Water down in the bowels of the earth was filtered and strange, a creeping living thing that could swell tides in a moment and drown and entire cavern system for months on end. It didn’t hiss, it didn’t seethe and flow, it didn’t fall in absurd ways from the sky. It didn’t get in his eyes half as much either. He’d forgotten flight too, but it came back easier, his wings remembering everything he did not. He’d never been a particularly elegant flier, he’d never been particularly elegant at anything, all brute force and primal power over anything approaching nimbleness. Elegant things were flimsy, elegant things splintered in your teeth. It was impossible to not hear him fly, every flap of his mighty wings a loud sound that was audible even in the pouring rain. It was always when the flapping stopped that you knew you were in trouble because that meant that someone far over your head was /diving/.

He’d eaten. He’d eaten a lot, and he could feel the energy coming back to him, spreading out into his muscles, bringing out the brilliance of his scales. His hearts pounded eagerly in time with their masters movements and he could feel the fire in him rekindle.
And yet. He was still hungry. Still hungry in a way that didn’t seem to want to go away no matter what he ate, it was an obsessive sort of need, reminding him of his drive to collect bones but far more urgent and far more physical. It was an irritation. In fact to Seph, everything was an irritation, from the rain that scattered from his wingbeats to the disobedient sky overhead, to the hunger that gnawed somewhere new entirely.

Scent didn’t travel well in rain, but it didn’t need to, Seph could smell a dying creature through miles and miles of cavern and smelling this one was easy. He banked his direction, following the blood until another scent ran tantalising fingers across his senses. It was nothing he’d ever smelled before, or at least, if he had, it had never fascinated him like this. It smelled like an answer, it smelled like something he needed, it smelled like hunger of a different sort.

Of course, being Seph, nothing ever halted him in the path of pursuing what he wanted, and in this instance suspicion was a distant voice ignored in the roar of curiosity and momentum.

He made no efforts to conceal his approach, alighting on the plateau with a thump, his massive claws digging into the stone. He inhaled audibly, letting his jaw fall open in a momentary flehmen response as he examined the new array of smells that this land brought him. Everywhere was rotting, everywhere was /bones/, everywhere was exactly the kind of thing he liked, but he couldn’t pick out the scent that was really what he was after.

Seph’s vision had always been by far his weakest sense, and perhaps that was why he didn’t notice Acan immediately, puzzled by the chaos of her fallen suitors.

Acan shivered, flaring out her scales like a feather rousing bird, and proceeded to lap her tongue between her armour plating. As hard as the rain fell, the accumulated filth was stubborn. She had learned to avoid cleaning around her various scent glands, knowing well that it would only stimulate the fog of smell that plagued her and make her situation even more difficult.

As she preened she became increasingly aware of the smell of blood radiating from the injured male at her feet. She was also vaguely aware of a heavy, rhythmic sound barely hidden by the thrumming of rain and coming closer and closer. Wing beats. Probably another idiot buck drawn to her like a moth, she thought dismissively. Blood lust was itching at her brain and calling her louder than those mysterious wing beats.

She tilted the males head around to better inspect his injury. Its skull had caved in slightly around an eye socket, with the eye itself staring wide and unseeing off at an angle. The dragon's chest heaved with rapid breathing, its jaw slack as it sucked in air. Disappointing. There was probably nothing left in it but primitive reflexes. There was nothing left to play with, to wring a reaction from. Still, she didn't bother to nip the pitiful beast's brain stem. Instead she tore at its chest, cracked back a couple of ribs, and snuffed around the innards for its liver.

The thump of something heavy landing behind her saw Acan immediately pull out her blood-drenched snout. Rain water and blood mixed easily and, as she tore her head around to inspect the newcomer, it flicked into her eyes. She stumbled back and pawed desperately for clear vision. The footsteps were too heavy, this beast was evidently bigger than her. This momentary weakness set her swiftly into a volatile self-defense mode - the scales around her neck puffed out and clattered, a combined snarl and hiss rolled from her throat, lips peeled back over her bloodied teeth, and she bowed her body into a crouch.

"Back off!" She shouted suddenly in a barely intelligible roar-bark. It had been a couple of years since she'd spoken, after all.

Seph’s immediate response when faced with something moving and potentially hostile was to prepare himself for a fight, a low furious rumble starting low in his chest like the distant fall of heavy stone before a landslide. It was an immediate prey drive response, all defiant and indignant fury. How dare anyone speak to him? How dare anything command him to obey? The anger was enormous and caught him up in it like a wildfire. Like a grizzly bear he threw himself onto his hind legs - a gesture which in other creatures would expose delicate underbelly but which in him exposed naught but a wall of solid scales - and he let out a massive, furious roar, splaying both of his front claws for a fight, black drool slopping to the ground even through the rain as his flames kicked up deep within him.

All of his was immediate, instinctual and raw, and it happened before his rational mind had even a moment to assess the situation. When it did, everything fell heavily into place. The voice was one that had stirred something in his memory and the dragon herself awoke so much more, the emotions agony in a creature so used to having none.

His massive tail, held for balance lashed and he let out another roar, but this one was more agonised, more frustrated and defiant and hopeless. He splayed his claws in an aggressive gesture of exasperation. Why here, why here and why now? Why when he had done so well to forget, when everything had been set aside, when he had become content to exist alone, with only Suriel at his beck and call, mute and obedient.

“THOU HAST NO PLACE BEING HERE.” he snarled, dropping back to all fours, digging his talons into the rock. “By all accounts thou should be dead, if thou had any honour thou wouldst be but a husk littering the landscape.” It would be better, he thought that she had died, that she was gone forever than that she had left. If she had died there would be a grief, there would be a closure. Now all that there was was questions, questions with uncomfortable answers that bit at his pride more surely than any teeth or claws ever could.

“Vile, deceptive thing.” he spat. “Thou art worth no more than this fetid field thou lurketh upon.”

The sudden and unexpected onslaught drew a very rare response from Acan. Her aggressive front immediately powered down, her expression one of hesitation that teetered on intimidation. The sheets of scales around her neck smoothed down obediently and her lips quivered as the snarl caught in her throat. She stood up straight, her feet shuffling awkwardly and her claws half-retracted as her brain wrestled with fight or flight.

Suddenly, however, her eyesight cleared and the big brute's identity clicked uncomfortably into place. His verbal onslaught was as ferocious as any physical attack, but despite his venomous words it spoke even more that he did not strike her. That was as far as she got in rationalising the situation.
She stepped back at first and stood there dumbly licking at the blood around her mouth. Her wide green eyes quivered over Seph while her brain ticked over, caught under a tide of returning memory. She barely had the processing power to understand what he was saying exactly, but the tone and ferocity spoke for itself and cut like a whip. The muscles in her legs began to shudder with the shock of adrenaline pounding its way through her system until finally she cracked.

"Fuck you!" She bit back with a predictable lack of eloquence. She surged forward to meet him but kept her body low to the ground, feet splayed far apart and clawing desperately at the ground for purchase lest he strike her. "Why throw insults at me when you could just bite my head off and have done with me? If I'm so worthless. If you're so outraged at me being alive why don't you just fuck off again? You're good at that," she snapped, all but biting the air and daring to shove her nose invasively close to his.

It had been a very long time since she'd had to look up at anyone.

Oh it would have been so fucking easy to just attack, to sink his teeth into her and make it last this time. It was something that hovered tantalisingly on the horizon of possibility, a path to an unrestrained future where he would be free of the ghost of her, of the memory that no amount of shifts seemed to slough off. He could change his skin but he couldn't change what lay behind his eyes or the things that lived there. He'd invited in a weakness, indulged it in the foolish deception that one day he'd simply break her neck and be done with her. It had been a temporary diversion turned into something he refused to ever draw out into the light.

He bared his fangs, every single one of them right back to his curved horns and snarled, a ragged and furious sound, the venting of nothing short of sheer vicious fury. All the quiet dwelling on the situation had coalesced into a bitter anger that seemed to radiate from every inch of the massive dragon.

And yet here she was, and in the moment was defiant as ever before him, even with fear written in the outline of her posture. Oh it would be so easy, so easy. Why did he tolerate such insolence? The voices had asked him often, whispering that to remove the weakness he'd invited in that he need only claw it out.

And yet in spite of it all, in spite of years of telling himself he would rip her wide open if he ever crossed her path again, here he was and there was no desire to do it, only anger that he was concerned would cool into something more hopeless, something more pathetic and unbecoming of a perfect beast such as him. So he fanned its flames because that was all he could do. He sniffed, inhaling deeply on the chainsaw downswing of his snarl, cutting it off.

And there was a realisation, up this close, of where all the wires in his brain went and where this particular scent earthed itself firmly.

"Me?" he said. "Why wouldst thou waste thy time fornicating with THIS when thou clearly possesses such a retinue of suitors as to make the most wanton harlot blush?"

His tail swung around forcefully, crushing the skull of her victim utterly and ending its drawn out suffering, quite the gesture from a dragon who obsessed over the art form of skulls and would loathe damage one unduly.

"Verily." he snarled "Thou hast been making most fucking merry. It makes sense! It makes all the sense in the realms that that was why thou left, why linger when there was nothing to sate thy most /feminine/ desires."

He clenched his front claws, dragging huge grooves beneath him.

"No, my sweet." he spat. "Fuck THEE."

And lowering his head, he moved to shove her very roughly with his horns.

Acan felt a swell of short-lived satisfaction at the impotent rage that was Seph's initial response to her challenge. At so close a proximity, his snarling vibrated in her bones and she even felt her clenched molars chattering.

It was his sudden accusations that swept the mood out of her. A flood of heat burned in her head and travelled down her body beneath her scale plating. This was literally a scene from her nightmares. Throughout her short-lived tryst with Adder she had been plagued with feelings of discomfort and guilt, feelings that had made her lash out wildly with tooth and claw on more than one occasion. She hated that guilt, hated that shadow of Seph that was always, /always/ cast over those vulnerable, intimate parts of her brain. Her claiming of Adder during her last heat had been part hormones, part fuck-you-Seph-for-not-being-here.

Still, her guilt shone through in the cast of her eyes, the falter in her snarling and the tightening of her facial muscles. It was a brief flash of vulnerability quickly covered up with affront. Though, honestly, she couldn't understand half of what he was saying through his flowery speech. She hadn't heard proper spoken language in years and words had never been a strength of hers. Luckily his actions and tone filled in the blanks.

"You have /got/ to be joking," she half-mumbled, her eyes narrowed. "You really have no-"

The shove caught her by surprise. After he'd initially backed down from her challenge she hadn't actually thought he would dare to strike at her. She had to suddenly throw her weight backwards to keep her head clear, quickly tucking her wings tight against her back in a defensive reflex to protect her most vulnerable parts.

The blow caught her right in the belly, winding her a little and throwing her slightly off balance. She tensed up like a cat, her claws protracting and screeching off the rock underfoot. One great forepaw whipped out to smack at his head, and while there was strength behind the intended blow she kept her claws clear.

Seph didn't understand the shift in Acan's expression, too entrenched in his mental image of her slinking off bored with him and his nonsense to get involved with some more pliable male, someone who wouldn't be quite so stuffy or quite so aggressive, someone who would respond in kind. It wasn't that Seph wasn't aware of reproduction and what went into it, he was very very old and had seen more than enough in his time. It had just never held any interest to him, bones were more interesting, murder and cruelty were more interesting.

It was just right now it seemed a lot more important than it had ever been and somehow that made his anger at missing her in the slightest all the more acute.

He wanted bitterly to just attack all out, to exact his frustrations and fury on her and everything that had happened, but even in a rage, even outraged at her retort, he knew he couldn't, pulling back with a bitter growl.

"I had but guessed where thou hadst slithered off to." he said, wrenching away and pacing. "I wanted to think thou had been slain. But no. Able bodied and alive. Has thee enjoyed thy freedom?"

Acan indulged herself in a little more satisfaction when Seph backed off. She took that as a victory of sorts but did not make the mistake of letting her guard down again. Instead she took a step back and kept her body stiff, ready, back arched slightly and head held high.

Again, it took a few beats for her to translate his talking into words that made sense. Her brain wasn't used to this kind of exercise and it certainly wasn't talented at it. She'd asserted many years ago, probably not long after Seph's departure, that verbal language was quite useless.

"/Slither/," she repeated the word with a snort and a roll of her eyes. "I'm not a beast that slithers. Far from it. Carry on talking to me like that I /will/ strike you again."

She wasn't quite bluffing, but even as she threw out another dare she became increasingly aware of an annoying little sliver of joy breaking through her fog of rage. Where Seph seemed disappointed, distressed even, by this sudden reunion, there was a daring tendril of deep pleasure in her that he was here and real and himself. She couldn't allow that to grow. It could make things...difficult.

"Is that Sephirosu for 'how've you been'?" She snarked at him. "I've been alive, that's enough. I was bitter for a time that you'd gone somewhere I couldn't follow. But that's just how you are. I expected too much from you. We can't all run away underground. Some of us have to weather the ingrates," she said, her voice starting to turn gravely and croaky.

Seph could feel the anger and what could almost be interpreted as hurt writhing inside him. He had always been blighted by emotions, too much for a creature like him to have to tolerate and he endured their relentless thundering inside his body like a shell. Emotion was a useless weakness that got you killed as a general rule, too much anger making you stupid and too much of anything else making you even more so. And yet he'd never been able to control the way it ebbed and flowed, only how he presented to the rest of the world. Right now it was difficult to maintain that appearance and the furious pacing became simply a way of translating excessive emotion into literal motion instead.

"I shall address thee however I see fit." he said, low and dangerous. "Do not purport to command me in what I should do."

But he listened to her reply, defensive and hostile in every line of his body, feeling she had no right at all to speak of endurance when she'd left him to readjust to the most abject solitude below the surface. Of course, being Seph it did not for even a moment occur to him that he might have been just as at fault for leaving. He didn't make mistakes, only other people did.

"Clearly thou hast been "weathering" many of them." he said, curling his already naturally curled lip in distaste as he looked at the fallen dragons.
